Governance

All politics are local, right? With this system, all political analysis will be regional.

How do our region's local governments work together? Do they work together at all? What if they did? What is the potential of cooperation between different city and county governments in Central Florida?

How much influence does our region have on state issues? Do we have a voice in the national arena? If we all presented a united front, would our influence grow? Having dozens of local governments talking about this issue will yield very enlightening answers to all of these questions.

A quote from Michael Gallis about the role of government in Central Florida:

"In our region, who is managing our 86 cities? Our composite shows that the congressional districts are too scattered. The role of cities and counties present special problems because our cities are too conglomerated and governing them is challenging."

Here’s what some concerned residents had to say:

"The regional thinking is going on in Washington – can we bring it here?"

"Our structure is confusing and fragmented, especially to newcomers."

"There is enough pressure on elected officials to serve constituents. They do not have the energy to think regionally."

"Avoid media at these discussions; the Sunshine Law is too discouraging for brainstorming and new ideas."
